Print - Badb
Badb was one of the three Morrignae, she was a shapeshifting Warrior Goddess, who along with her sisters: The Morrigan and Macha, would shriek across the battlefields causing chaos and fear.
She was the Goddess of Prophecy and Clarity. In battle, she would cast a mist across the land causing confusion and fear amongst her enemies, fearless and powerful, her gift of prophecy enabled her to foretell of death. Badb was known as the ‘Bhean Si’ Banshee. Bhean or Bean is the Irish word for woman, and Si, in old Irish means faery or faery mound, Badb therefore was the ‘woman of the faery mound’.
The shrieking wail of Badb would bring fear amongst those who heard it, fearing a loss of a loved one. This was not a threat, but an alert that she was ready to escort those who were about to depart from the living world.
