These were ancient Greek religious rites in honour of Demeter: Goddess of the Harvest & her daughter Persephone: Queen of the Underworld and Goddess of Spring. These highly secret initiation ceremonies were for women only and what took place is still a mystery today, but they were based on the myth of Demeter's search for Persephone after she was abducted by Hades. It represents a cycle of separation and reunion.
